ZARA

Her Love for Adventure

She rose quickly from the ground with a sharp breath. Her left arm was numb, and it was too dark to tell if the bleeding had stopped. With a loud grunt, she shifted her weight forward and stood up.

“Okay… okay I can do this… I just have to think” she whispered to herself. She reached around in the darkness to find something to gather her bearings. She couldn’t help but imagine something reaching back. That thing could have followed her down here after all.

With a few minutes of aimless searching, she finally placed her hand on a cold brick wall. “YES!” she exclaimed inadvertently. A loud roar erupted from the other side of the room followed by the wet and heavy sounding footsteps of that thing. She moved away as quickly as possible, making sure that each step was quieter than the last. The snarling grew closer with every second. The fear of being caught was enough to make her tear up. She sensed she only had a few more seconds until it got to her. The steps got closer and closer no matter where she moved. Defeated, she slowly put her hands together and began praying in a whisper. “Please God… please help me and I swear I’ll be a better person. I’ll go back to America. I’ll give blood. I’ll feed the homeless. I’ll do anything just please help me. I don’t want to die. I don’t want it to end like this.”

The snarling stopped and the footsteps slowed to a halt. She held her breath. She didn’t want to disturb the new-found silence. The footsteps began again, but this time it was heading away from her. It worked. Divine intervention saved her.

She finally took a breath after what seemed like hours. She looked toward the ceiling and whispered “Thank you God.”

It began to laugh. “Hah…hah hah… hahhahhh… hahahahahah…HAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHHAHA '' boomed a deep and menacing voice from across the room.

“DO YOU REALLY THINK THAT GOD WOULD SAVE YOU FROM ME?”

The footsteps began approaching her. The panic completely took over her body. She dropped to the ground to search for anything she could defend herself with.

“GOD IS THE ONE WHO PUT YOU HERE. WITH ME. AND GOD IS THE ONE WHO ABANDONED YOU TO DIE.”

She began crying and reaching out further and further desperately trying to find a rock. Just as her fingers grazed a sizable boulder, its foot stomped on her hand, breaking her fingers. The blood seeping from her fingers was overcome in a warm sweet-smelling ooze.

“I’m going to love grinding your bones into my strawberry milkshake.”

Her Adventure: Part 2

The creature cackled manically as Zara squealed in pain. The bones in her hand were broken. She could no longer feel her left arm. Why in the world did she think it would be safe to come into this house. Even if it was for an all-expense paid trip to anywhere she wanted. For a moment, she was calm. There was nothing she could do. The chocolate beast was too strong. She was done for. There is no such thing as a free vacation.

From the silence, the beast asked “Why, little one. Why do you not struggle? Is it so easy to give up on your own life?” Zara ignored the beast’s taunts. The pain coursing through her body was too great to focus on anything else. She wished she could see Butter again. One last time. One last glimmer of beauty to remind her that the world is not so evil.

The beast removed it’s weighty foot from Zara’s mangled hand. The monster stepped back and began looking around. “Something feels off. You were supposed to come alone.” A menacing wolf-like figure emerged from the darkness. The wolf’s claws clicking against the stone flooring as it approached. Zara looked up at the wolf and was shocked to see a small brown and white dog with the fluffiest fur you had ever seen. It was Butter.

“One mangy mutt? I think I can handle this” the creature cackled sarcastically.

Suddenly a tall man kicked in the door and stepped into the shadowy room with what looked like a flamethrower. The man called out to the monster “Looks like smores are on the menu” The flames erupted from the gun and covered the chocolate monstrosity in ignited gasoline. The beast screamed in agony and began chaotically swiping at the flaming bits of himself.” Butter ran straight towards Zara and began dragging her by her clothes toward the exit, which was now illuminated from when the man entered the room. Flames began igniting every surface it touched, turning the room from dark abyss to flaming hell scape.

With Butter’s help, Zara managed to stand up and begin running toward the exit. The monster released a blood curdling screech as it’s chocolate exterior melted toward the ground.

“Come on my love, did you really think I’d let you go on a vacation without me?” The man turned toward her with that charming smile only he had. Zara gasped. She had never been so happy to see Pedro in her life.
